Phenis William Drayton was born on January 30, 1930 to the union of the late Joseph Drayton and Louise Singleton Drayton in Georgetown, South Carolina. The family later moved to Florence County, SC where Phenis received his education in the public schools of Pamplico, South Carolina.
Phenis was united in holy matrimony to Ruth M Grant in 1950 and to this union they were blessed with five children. Phenis later moved his family to Buffalo, New York where their children were raised.
He was employed by Cement Solvay in Lackawanna, New York for many years until his retirement. After his retirement he relocated back to Pamplico, South Carolina. He joined the Aimwell Baptist Church in Pamplico, SC under the leadership of the Rev Robbie Gabriel. He later joined the Geneses Baptist Church in Pamplico, SC where he became a trustee under the leadership of Rev J. Daryl Wood.
Phenis was preceded in death by his parents, five (5) brothers John, Richard, Joe/Joseph, Francis and Joseph Taylor Drayton and one (1) sister Lillie Mae Drayton Bostic.
On Saturday November 9, 2013 Phenis quietly slipped away peacefully. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of sixty-three (63) years, Ruth Drayton of the home, two daughters Sandra Brown of the Home and Jeanette Drayton of Buffalo, New York, three (3) sons, Joseph Nathaniel (Susan) Drayton of Seattle, WA; William Earl and James Edwards Drayton both of Buffalo, New York. Two (2) brothers, Sonny (Deloris) Drayton and Nathaniel (Janice) Drayton both of Buffalo, New York. Also cherishing his memory is his sisters Lizzie Drayton of Pamplico, SC, Annie L Washington of Williamsburg, VA and his oldest niece who was raised as a sister, Shirley Bostic Powell of Wilson, NC., four sister-in-laws, Umber Lee Drayton of Buffalo, NY, Daisy Grant (William) Seigle, Rosa J (Jimmie) McWhite and Mary (Rev J Daryl) Wood of Pamplico, SC. He also leaves fourteen (14) grandchildren, thirty-three (33) great grandchildren and four (4) great great grandchildren and a special nephew Larry Drayton and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
